Member Missionaries

Dearest Family,

Member missionary work is the best. There's a family in the American Ward and the husband is a convert and he is always talking about the gospel with everyone. We've never really talked to him about it because we split the ward members with the anziani and this family was in their half of the ward, but the other week we reorganized the split, so the Douberly family is now ours. We were pretty excited. So we called him up Saturday night to ask if he knew anyone we could meet. He was super excited and set up a dinner appointment with us for the next night and promised that someone would be there.
I think that lesson was one of the most amazing I've ever seen. There is such a power when members bear their sincere testimonies to their friends.
Sorella Pond and I have been talking lately about how we can improve our work with members and that experience really boosted that desire.

I love you all and hope you have a wonderful week!

Dear Family,

Cool Story! So way back before Christmas, we recieved a call from this man, who said he had found our pass-a-long card with a picture of Christ lying on the street  and he wanted a Finding Faith in Christ DVD. Suffice it to say that that has never happened, and I was completely shocked. But I tried to set up an appointment, he said to call him on Saturday, and for the day, we left it at that. Saturday came, I called, and the phone wasn't reachable. A few days later I called again and the phone wasn't reachable. This continued until we gave him one last call, and gave up trying. Well, a couple days later he called us back trying to figure out who we were. Sorella Pond talked to him and was able to set up an appointment to meet in centro and give him the DVD. We learned that he lived out in a small town a little ways away, so we came up with the wonderful plan of convincing him to accept a visit from the Capi Zona who have a car.
The meeting went pretty well. He had done his research on the church, had mostly found only good things, and was curious to learn more. We explained that while Finding Faith in Christ was a very good DVD, to learn more about the church he needed to read the Book of Mormon and meet with the missionaries. He thought he had a Book of Mormon at home somewhere and said he would look at it, but didn't want to hear more yet. We decided to wait a couple days and give him a call.
Then last Saturday, after a hard lesson, we were walking home and the Capi called. They told us that they had been in a jewlery shop talking to the owner about the church, and all he wanted to do was argue. They were doing their best to explain when suddenly the one other person in the store started defending them. They eventually left and started talking to this man, who explained that he had met with us a couple days before, he was reading the Book of Mormon, and he was willing to meet with them. In the words of an anziano, ''I think [he] just got slapped in the face with the need to meet with the missionaries.''
Sometimes when we hand out materials on the street I wonder if anything ever happens to them. Then miracles happen and people like this man call us or we see a card randomly hanging in someone's home. It's pretty great knowing that we're doing the work of the Lord.

In other news, Sorella Pond and I are staying in Pordenone another transfer! Since this is her forth transfer here, she'll probably be leaving after this, which means I'll probably be staying atleast one more after that. Which means I'll be here for four months as well!

Vi voglio bene! As always, I love hearing about your missionary work at home! It sounds like you're having some amazing experiences.

Love,

Buon Anno!!

Dear Family!

Happy New Year!

It was WONDERFUL to see and talk/only see (Sorry Melanie and Steve) ya'll on Christmas!
Hopefully the rest of your Christmas holidays went well.

This week was pretty fun because we started teaching a family! We set up an appointment with a potential who lives in Sacile, about a twenty minute train ride from here, and when we showed up, she had a family! Husband and three beautiful children. We taught them the restoration and left them with copies of the Book of Mormon in multiple languages, and set up a return appointment. It was pretty fun. Plus it has been a while since I've taught a family, like hardly ever has happened, so we were pretty excited.

Thanks to the New Year we were unable to write yesterday, cause the internet point was closed, so our Ward Mission Leader invited us up to the church for lunch and games. We ate lots of food (so when the missionaries come, LET THEM SERVE THEMSELVES!) I don't know why everyone assumes that we eat like elders. But I've learned to smile and pack down the food piece by piece. The trick is to not think and not stop. Italian food is delicious but they feed you alot.

This morning we had Zone Training, it was really good. We analyzed our numbers, our planners, and our commitment extending skills, did a role play, and of course we took pictures! So was planning on sending you an up to date picture of me today, but the computer isn't recognizing my card, so it will have to wait until next week unless I forget.
Here's some fun Venezia Zone info- Sorella Montagnoli just got space transfered into Mestre right before Christmas to be one of the Sister Training Leader (David she says hello). Also, Anziano Hillyard is in Gorizia, his grandparents are in the good old 31st ward, Sister... oh mama mia! why can't I remember my preschool teacher's name????? But her grandson is in my zone which is pretty fun news.

All is well in Pordenone. It's cloudy with rain. Transfers are next week, which means kinder eggs are this week. I'm crossing my fingers that Sorella Pond and I can stay together for three transfers. It would be pretty fantastic.

I love you all!!!

Joyeux Noel!!

Dear Mom,

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Can I just say that I am soo excited for tomorrow!!! Tonight we're reading a Christmas story, sitting in our living room by the radiators, staring at our Christmas mantle, eating chocolate and gelato. Then we're waking up to presents in the fireplace (thanks for the package and the cookies!!!) studying the scriptures, then we'll have a mulitcultural day with Italian pranzo, a Romanain pranzo, a African dinner, and the evening with Americani. I'll be skyping at 6ish that evening Italian time.

I love you, am excited to talk to you, and with you a BUON NATALE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love,

Merry Christmas!!!

Dear Family,

Last night was the American Relief Society Christmas Party, they had a wonderful progressive dinner. We cheerfully ate American food, listened to beautiful music numbers (including Carol of the Bells on the steel drum! it was soo cool!), and chatted with members, less actives, and non member friends. When we showed up at the first house we asked what we could do to help, and were told to just go and sit down. That was a shock to our systems, but it was a lovely evening. There was an Italian lady there who was invited by her neighbor, so I went and talked to her for a while. She's come to several activities before and said that while she understands almost nothing of what is said, she likes to come and experience the American culture. Being with the Americans is just different than being with Italians. I love them  both, but it's helped me realize how much I love Italy.

Work in Pordenone is going pretty well. We've experienced a little slow down because of the hollidays, but we've also seen some wonderful miracles. The other night we had a little bit of a rough finding experience, so we sat down on a bench, took a breather, and made some calls. We called an investigator that we've been working with for over a month, but is hard to see. We've only had one formal appointment that we've set a head of time that she doesn't cancel, but we've given her lots of passbys so we've been able to see her. She hasn't been reading in the Book of Mormon or making any progress. Anyway, I called her and talked with her for a minute and asked her if she had read in the Book of Mormon this week. Her reply was ''not really, maybe a little'' which normally means, no. So I think I might have asked what she read about because suddenly she said that she read something about Manchester. I was shocked. So after a little more prompting, she opened up and told me all about the Joseph Smith Tesitmony at the start of the Book of Mormon and then finished with, ''I wasn't able to read much, I need read a lot more.'' God always gives you miracles right when you need them.

If you remember a few weeks ago, I talked about baptismal challenges and how we walked right up to a man in a park introduced ourselves, our purpose, and asked him to be baptized. He replied with, ''I guess I should know something about your church first.'' Sadly, he's a single man, so we passed him onto the Anziani to teach, but he's been coming to church ever since and is getting baptized next week!

I'm completely enjoying having Christmas time in Italy. Centro is completely decorated with giant lights across the streets, santa's village, and a giant Christmas tree. We ride through with our bikes and there's always at least one person playing an accordian.

For the most part the humidity has left and a dry cold has set in, but last Friday the valley was covered with fog. We were visiting a member closer to the mountains, and he drove us up above the fog line and we could see the blanket of clouds enveloping the area.

Well, Have a wonderful week! Since next p-day is Christmas, we'll be taking a little time on Tuesday for grocery shopping and email. We still haven't confirmed plans for when we'll be calling, so the same two hour gap applies for now, but on Tuesday I'll be able to give you a better idea of when I'll be calling.

Love you!

Sorella Pace

Buon Dicembre!

Dear Family,

This week has been amazing! I think I'm starting to love working with two wards. It's crazy though because all the Americans live out in little towns, and the bus schedule in winter is not built for missionary work. We tried to get a monthly abbondamento for the bus for the whole region, and the lady just stared at us and told us we could only get one for a specific town. But with the help of members with cars we're figuring it out. After visiting one member we asked her to help us find the address of an inactive. She pulled out her tablet, typed the address into googlemaps and drove us there. Then she asked us how we normaly find places. hahahahaha. Well we only have a map for the city of Pordenone and the two closest towns and beyond that we go by bus stops, faith, and prayers.
But I realized that dispite all the times in my mission that I have stepped off a bus or train without a clue where we were, not even certain if we were in the right town, there are very few times that we haven't found where we want to go, and usually in time for our appointment. The Lord blesses us far more than we realize.

I love you all. Have a wonderful week!

Sorella Pace

We decorated for Christmas last week! Here's our Christmas mantle! With our tiny Christmas tree. We borrowed a couple mattresses from the old apartment for when the traveling sorelle came for a scambi, so now we sit on the mattresses in the corner y the radiator and stare at the mantle. It's great!

Even better we have presents under the tree! And compared to the tree, they're gigantic.

All the Africans call me Sister Peace. I love it! I have a bit of an identity crisis now that I'm working with both Americans and Italians cause I don't know how to pronounce my name. With the Africans though, it doesn't matter either way it means the same thing!

My crazy comp (Sorella Pond) and I with our hat-scarves!!
